Regulations and Requirements

Note:  (The applicant should proceed to the Directorate of Registration at KBMS HQ building Floor 4 to be guided for application and submit the requested documents mentioned below).

General rules

·         Minimum period of the study and training is four calendar years.

·         The holder of Kurdistan Board for Medical Specialties Certificate is considered to be specialist from the date of issuance of certificate.

·         Regulations which organize teaching staff and postgraduate student issues in universities of Kurdistan Region of Iraq are the same applied on KBMS; except examination affairs which will be managed by KBMS own regulations.

 

 

Applicants must be Iraqi Nationalities

 

 

Regulations and Requirements

A.  General Requirements

1.    The applicant should apply a request to KBMS asking for admission in postgraduate study in KBMS.(Form request for admission).

2.    Applicant should present an original copy of transcript of marks record (وثيقة درجات) in English language which supporting him/her to be a graduate of Medical College or College of Dentistry; recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Kurdistan Region and Iraq (holding a primary university degree or equivalent degree).

3.    Applicant should present an original copy of transcript of Graduation Certificate (شهادة التخرج (جدارية)) in English, or Arabic or Kurdish languages.

4.    Should submit the original transcript of ‘No Objection’ letter from his/her employer (e.g. Directorate General of Health) stating employer approval to join the study once he/she enrolled in the study. This letter should be attached with his / her curriculum vitae (CV) which should include basic information and details of the following points (5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) accordingly.

5.    Fulfillment of mandatory house officer and rural service period (except for those apply to the specialties mentioned in point no.8 in the context of mandatory rural service period).

 

6.    Fulfillment of mandatory one year training as senior house officer is a must for application for the following specialties (the last date for considering the aforementioned period is 1st October of each year ):

a.    Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

b.    Maxillofacial Surgery

c.    Radiation Oncology

d.    Anesethia and Intensive Care

e.    Laboratory Medicine

f.    Oncology

g.    Dermatology

h.   Clinical Hematology:-

     (Training in internel Medicine or Clinical Hematology or Oncology as senior house officer is required)

 

7.      Fulfillment of mandatory two year training as a senior house officer is a must for application to the following specialties (the last date for considering the aforementioned period is 1st October of each year):

a.    Plastic Surgery

b.    Radiology & Medical imaging

 

8.    Exemption of those who apply to the following specialties from requirement of mandatory rural service period:

a.    Emergency Medicine

b.    Anesethia and Intensive Care

 

9.    Application for Cardiothoracic and vascular Surgery: Fulfillment of at least mandatory one year training as senior house officer for Cardiothoracic and vascular Surgery or two years training as senior house officer in General Surgery is a must (the last date for considering the aforementioned period is 1st October of each year).

10.    English Proficiency Test: The applicant should present the original transcript of English Language Proficiency test, the test either conducted by a body in public sector recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research or Ministry of Education, or in private sector to be held by a body recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as the following:

a.    Public sector: to be conducted by a body in public sector recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research ( e.g. Salahaddin University, Sulaimaniah or Duhok university) or Ministry of Education. Applicant should present the English Language Proficiency Test which should not be older than three years (3) before application date.

b.    Private sector: Applicant should present Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which should not be older than three years (3) before application date with minimum score of (480) for each of TOEFL PBT, or TOEFL IBT with minimum score of (54) or International English Language Test (IELTS) which should not be older than two years (2) before application date with minimum score of (5.5) or Pearson Academic (PTE) with minimum score of 46.

c.    English Proficiency Test for applicants with degrees equivalent to Diploma (one year, two year), Master and Doctorate will not be expired and valid for unlimited period.

11.  Computing competence Test:

       a. The applicant should present the original transcript of this test which should not be older than five years (5) before application date.The test should be conducted by a body recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

      b. Computing competence Test for applicants with degrees equivalent to Diploma (one year, two year), Master and Doctorate will not be expired and valid for unlimited period

12. Applicant should present an original transcript for a medical report issued by medical committee established by institutions affiliated to Ministry of Health (e.g. Directorate of Health) stating his / her fitness for postgraduate study and free of communicable diseases.

13. The Applicant should sit an admission examination and an interview. The rates are calculated as the following:

A.   40 marks for graduation marks of college.

B.   10 marks will be counted as the following:

§  4 marks for holders of Doctorate, Master or two-year higher diploma degree.

§  2 marks for holders of one-year higher diploma degree.

§  2 marks for each year of training as senior house officer to not exceed two years.

§  1 mark for each year of practicing in his / her specialty as specialty practitioner ((ممارس فرعto not exceed two years.

C.   50 marks for admission examination, the minimum pass mark should be 30 marks.

14. After disclosing the result of KBMS admission examination; those who passed the examination should pass the interview to assess his / her physical and personal abilities for the study, training and commitment to KBMS rules and regulations, Which should be prepared by the applicant and submitted to the Directorate of Registration in KBMS not later than 1st October (start of calendar year).

15. Applicant should not have been dismissed or cancelled his/her enrollment from postgraduate studies of universities in Iraq or abroad because of ignorance or leaving the study due to ineligible reasons.

16. Applicant age should not exceed 45 years.

17. KBMS study is full time. Hence; trainee will practice as senior house officer. Practicing in private health sector is prohibited throughout the study period.

18. Concurrent registration at KBMS and other postgraduate studies is not allowed.

19. The trainee should not assign to training centers other than his/her training center unless obtain the approval of relevant Clinical Specialties Council.

20. Those who fulfill admission requirements will get (registration code); this code becomes trainee box file code and will hold it to the end of the study. A list of admitted applicants   will be prepared and addressed to Training Affairs Directorate.

21. Registration for study will starts within two weeks of start of academic year in KBMS (1st October). Exceptionally; the relevant Clinical Specialties Council based on specific regulations is authorized to extend the period of the Registration for another two weeks.

 

B.  Specific Requirements:  (Relevant to those applying to KBMS subspecialties)

1.    Applicants to KBMS subspecialties should hold the degree of KBMS, The Arab Board for Medical Specializations, The Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations, MRCP or its equivalent in General Specialty.

2.    Period of study for KBMS Subspecialties is 3 (three) academic years.

3.    Applicants to KBMS subspecialties are exempted from some of aforementioned general requirements as the following:

a.    Transcript of marks record (وثيقة درجات)

b.    English Proficiency Test

c.    Computing competence Test

4.    Applicants to KBMS subspecialties are requested to present the following documents during application:

a.    Original copy of transcript of Post- Graduation Certificate (شهادة الأختصاص (جدارية)) in English, or Arabic or Kurdish languages.

b.    The applicant should apply a request to KBMS asking for admission in postgraduate study in KBMS.

c.    Applicant should present an original transcript for a medical report issued by medical committee established by institutions affiliated to Ministry of Health (e.g. Directorate of Health) stating his / her fitness for postgraduate study.

d.    Should submit the original transcript of ‘No Objection’ letter from his/her employer (e.g. Directorate General of Health) stating employer approval to join the study once he/she enrolled in the study. This letter should be attached with his / her curriculum vitae (CV).

5. Those who fulfill admission requirements will get (registration code); this code becomes trainee box file code and will hold it to the end of the study.

6.   Applicant age should not exceed 45 years.

7.   Those who apply to clinical hematology should be specialist in internal Madicine (Fulfill point No. 1 requirement) .

 

 

Note:  Most of documents (including transcripts) submitted for admission purposes become the property of KBMS which could be released for the applicant upon applicant request once photocopied by KBMS. While, transcript of ‘No Objection’ letter and transcript of marks record (وثيقة درجات) will not be released for the applicant and become the property of KBMS.
